First time Captain Ravi Ashwin’s Kings XI Punjab started their IPL campaign with a thumping 6 wickets win over Delhi Daredevils.
Ravi Ashwin won the toss and chose to field first. Four foreign players in the playing eleven for Kings XI included David Miller, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye and the young 17 year old Afghani player Mujeeb ur Rahman. Delhi included Colin Munro, Chris Morris, Dan Chrisitian and Trent Boult as their four foreign players.
Mujeeb ur Rahman made history as the first youngest player to play in IPL.
Delhi started their innings on a muted note. Delhi lost wickets consistently and at the end they posted a competitive total of 166. Captain Gautam Gambhir top scored for the visiting side with 55 runs of 42 balls. Rishab Pant scored quickfire 28 off 13 balls. For the home side, Mohit Sharma and the young Mujeeb Ur Rahman took 2 wickets each.
Chasing a total of 167 to win, Punjab started on a blistering note. Opener KL Rahul deposited almost all the balls he faced to the boundary. He set the IPL record for the fastest fifty with 50 runs of 14 balls which contained 6 fours and 4 sixes. New comer Karun Nair scored a composing 50 off 32 balls. Punjab reached the target in 18.5 overs with 6 wickets to spare. David Miller and Marcus Stoinis scored 24 and 22 runs and stayed till the end and took Kings XI to victory.
KL Rahul was adjudged Man of the Match.
