Hyderabad won a last ball thriller against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Hyderabad handed Mumbai their 2nd defeat in IPL and Mumbai remained winless in their first 2 games. Hyderabad won 2 out of 2 and remained unbeaten in their first 2 games and stood at the top of the league table.
Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to field first. Foreign players for Hyderabad included Captain Kane Williamson,Billy Stanlake,Shakib Al Hasan and Rashid Khan. Mumbai made few changes to their playing XI. Hardik Pandya was ruled out due to injury and Pradeep Sangwan replaced him. Ben Cutting replaced Mitchell McClenaghan.
Asked to bat first, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals and they couldn’t continue with great momentum. Opener Erwin Lewis top scored for Mumbai with 29 runs. Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav scored 28 each. Mumbai ended their innings at 147/8 in the allotted 20 overs. S Kaul took 2/29 and Sandeep Sharma too 2/25 in their respective 4 overs.
Chasing a victory target of 148, Dhawan and Saha gave blistering start to Sunrisers. Dhawan continued his good form and blasted the bowlers all around the ground. Sunrisers reached 50 in the 6th over. Saha was the first one to get dismissed for 22 runs by the young spinner Markande. Sunrisers lost their first wicket at 63 in the 7th over. But Dhawan never looked stepping back and continued his merry hitting form.
Kane Williamson got dismissed cheaply this time for 6 and the scorecard read 73/2 in 8 overs. First 2 wickets of the sunrisers went to DRS and both were successful for the Mumbai Indians. Dhawan tried to pull one from Markande and got out in the next over. Mumbai were slowly getting back into the game with that 2 quick wickets of the big guns. Dhawan scored 45 runs off 28 balls with 8 cracking boundaries. Manish Pandey was the next one to get dismissed cheaply for 11 runs. Sunrisers were reduced to 89/4 in 10.2 overs. Markande then dismissed Shakib in the 13th over. Score was 107/5. Sunrisers were in panic mode as they last 4 wickets for 34 runs. Markande was the main destroyer who completed his impressive spell of 4-0-23-4 .
Yusuf Pathan and Deepak Hooda had put a decent partnership and took sunrisers within 12 runs short of the target. Then the drama unfolded. Sunrisers lost 2 wickets of Yusuf Pathan and Rashid Khan in consecutive balls bowled by Bumrah and they were reduced to 136/7, still needing 12 runs of 13 balls. Sunrisers lost their 8th and 9th wicket in 19th over and they were reeling at 137/9 in 19 overs. Mustafizur picked 2 wickets in the 19th over. Sunrisers needed 11 runs of 6 balls in the last over with the key batsman Deepak Hooda still in crease.
Ben Cutting bowled the crucial last over. First ball of the last over went for six with 5 needed of 5 balls. Then a wide. 4 needed of 5 balls. Dotball. 4 needed of 4 balls. Then 3 singles in the next 3 balls. 1 run was needed of the last ball with a wicket in hand. But Billy Stanlake kept his cool and hit a boundary of the last ball to keep his team unbeaten in IPL 2018. Wow!!! What a thriller this low scoring game has turned out to be!!. Not good for heart patients folks.
Mumbai Indians has to blame their batsmen for not putting enough runs on the board. But their bowlers did a tremendous job of pulling things back to the last ball. Defending Champions Mumbai Indians think tank needs lot of work to get things back on track.
